CIVIL LEGAL AID SYSTEM

Minnesota civil legal aid programs serve low-income people facing legal crisis statewide. Examples include helping victims of domestic violence achieve safety, preserving housing stability and preventing homelessness caused by illegal and improper evictions and foreclosures, protecting vulnerable Minnesotans from financial exploitation, and maximizing the ability of people who are elderly or have disabilities to live safely and independently in their communities.

If you would like to learn more about services to resolves disputes without a lawyer, Community Mediation Minnesota provides statewide services such as mediation or restorative practices. This includes issues between neighbors, landlords and tenants, and family relationships. They can be reached at 1-833-266-2663 or through CommunityMediationMN.org.
Civil legal aid is separate from the public defender system that serves people who are charged with a crime and can’t afford an attorney. More information on eligibility for a public defender is available through the State Board of Public Defense.
